im glad to see its not only the u,k government that use the media to try & brainwash people into thinking they are saving the planet by using so called experts to promote this crap, this is all about justifying green taxes etc & sod all to do with climate change, anybody with half a brain knows its the earths natural cycle & sod all to do with what we burn.
CFL from China gave a burning smell in my kitchen. I threw it out. I bought the first generation of CFL, it burned out after 3 years. Some were reported to cause fire. I used a CFL in the outdoor lights, it burned out in a week. Now, I use LED, and new CFL in the house, so far so good. But, I still throw it in the garbage since there are no recycling in my area. Some day the whole CFL will work out for us all.
Look up on google “CFLs Responsible for House Fire in Maryland.”
DO NOT USE THESE ON DIMMERS. look it up if you don’t believe me. This stuff can catch fire.
Two of mine blew out early too. Yes I bought generic. No joke: one just caught fire an hour ago actually. It sent an Erie red pinkish laser fire/flame. Lasted about a year. The other burnt out several months ago, with out as dramatic an effect! There is an article of one which burnt a house down!!!So CFL bulbs = mercury + less reliability + higher cost.I’ll use my reg bulb from now on, and merely cut down on use if I have to save money.
highonsmog- Were the CFL bulbs you had trouble with made in China? or by a non namebrand manufacturer? The only CFLs I’ve ever had trouble with were made in China.btw CFL bulbs = less mercury. There will be a NET reduction in mercury entering the environment as a result of less coal being burned to power them. Phillips lighting has a new bulb they claim keeps the mercury contained if broken. The net gain, environmentally and economically far outweigh undue concerns over contamination
OceanportECP–They were advocated by EPA + Edison, which is why I had bought them. If Chinese made bulbs are problematic, shouldn’t the gov, which is boldly advocating these bulbs, condemn the Chinese variety? The average person doesn’t know what to buy, and silly like me.However, I see your point about mercury.Nevertheless, CFLs are used at night; when turbines produce excess electricity, hence lower rates. Thus, your net gain is not real, coz turbines still produce toxic wastes.
The lady in this video isn’t very bright when it comes to common sense over light bulbs. Geez who the hell really cares how the bulbs look. If they save lots of money over time, should their looks really matter? They don’t even look bad to begin with.
Her name is “Mel” from Sunrise of Australias Channel 7 and seriously, she is the dumbest, peice of shit on that show.
CFLs would be great if they actually lasted 3 years. I have never had one last a whole year.
